Oh Boy! (and Girl!)

This afternoon my lovely husband and I headed out in the sunshine to shoot a maternity portrait session. I absolutely love maternity portraits, and this session was extra special…. because the subject of all of the photos was ME!!

Yes, you read that right, and yes, that means I’m pregnant! But that’s not the end of the story, the other half is that I’m pregnant with TWINS! We’ve always known we wanted to have kids and we were completely overjoyed when we found out that we were going to be expecting a little one in November, but now that we know it’s two we feel doubly blessed :) At our most recent doctor’s appointment we found out via ultrasound that we are going to be having one boy and one girl, which means for all of you wondering out there that they are fraternal, not identical.

Having a due date in November means that I’m actually still in my second trimester, which is normally too early to do maternity photos, but since I have these TWO babies, my belly has made an appearance rather early :) I will definitely be doing some more “official” maternity photos with another photographer once I’m farther along and even bigger but for now here are a few shots that Ben took. I love my little belly :)

I will probably be making periodic baby/belly updates from now on, and I’ll definitely be posting my “official” maternity photos once I have them taken. I still don’t know who will be taking them yet, so any suggestion or volunteers are definitely welcome :) Picking a photographer is just one thing on our very long list of things to do to get ready for our babies!! I can’t wait to meet them!

Chelsea & Nate - Family Photo Time!

While I was in San Diego for Sarah and Tony’s fabulous wedding I also had the pleasure of taking some family photos for my friend Chelsea and her lovely husband Nate. Chelsea runs a super fabulous blog 88words and also sells some very cool necklaces, so you should check that out (after looking at her super cute family that is!) We only had a few minutes of cooperation from the family as a whole, her older son was feeling quite under the weather and wanted to go lie down, but we did manage to snag a couple of photos with him, and a bunch with the munchkin!

What do you do when little boys don’t want to have their picture taken? Why bribe them with cupcakes of course :)

Letting grandpa have a sniff test before he dives in…

And then of course running off to hide while eating his cupcake. Well at least it was worth a try :)

As long as the kids were all done with their photos for the day we decided to take a few quick shots of just mom and dad…. so sweet :)

Chelsea, Nate & co I hope you had a fantastic vacation in San Diego and enjoy your photos!

Sneak Peek: Sam & Will

I had an amazing engagement session yesterday at one of my absolute favorite spots! I am so excited to finish sorting and editing the images so that I can post them all up here for you to see… but I just couldn’t bear to go any longer without showing you at least one :) Any guesses where this is?

I hope to get the rest of these up in the next day or so and I have lots more fun sessions coming up as well so keep checking in!

Melyssa & Jeff Engaged!

When I first talked with Melyssa and Jeff about shooting their wedding this summer, Melyssa was skeptical about the idea of having an engagement session. She told me she was a little bit shy in front of the camera and really didn’t love having her picture taken. I ALWAYS encourage my couples to do an engagement session, especially if they’re camera shy, because wouldn’t you rather get used to being in front of my camera BEFORE your wedding day? :)
We met at the Torrey Pines state reserve in the late afternoon for some gorgeous warm light, and had an absolute blast shooting. After hiding from the camera initially (I actually think she yelped a little and ducked behind Jeff when I took it out of my bag) Melyssa calmed down a bit and started looking amazingly comfortable in front of the lens. They are such a wonderful couple and their love for each other couldn’t help coming through in all of their images. Thank you so much for agreeing to do an engagement session, I can’t wait for your wedding in July!

Does this look like the face of someone who’s camera shy to you? They are so cute together and they were completely relaxed once they realized that having their portraits taken meant lots of cutesy couple time, not scary posed awkwardness :)

The sunset light is so warm and yummy and we had a perfect day for shooting! I love it!

After a bit of shooting up on the cliffs we followed one of the hikes down to the beach. My flip flops really weren’t meant for hiking but I think the shots we got down on the beach were worth the couple of cactus thorns in my feet :)

I couldn’t decide which one of these I liked better so I just posted both, SO cute!!

Oh my goodness I LOVE this one! The look on her face is priceless! Melyssa and Jeff are so sweet together!

And one last shot, a little bit of sunset goodness…

Melyssa and Jeff, thank you so much for playing along and coming out for an engagement session, I had so much fun with you! Your wedding is going to be amazing, I can already tell :) See you in July!

Lighting Fun - More Photos!

Ok well I finally have a spare second to blog! The holiday craziness is definitely catching up to me so I haven’t had much in the way of free time lately.

On Sunday Crissy and I brought our gear and husbands out to a park in LA to try out some new off camera lighting techniques. Having spent the morning poring over strobist and trying to memorize some rules of thumb, we pretty much just decided we’d try a bit of everything and see what happened. Trial and error if you will… we definitely learned a lot and we will definitely be heading out again to try out some more fun tricks. Here are a couple of my favorite shots from Sunday.

Marcus and Ben were both supposed to be our guinea pigs models but Ben preferred to be on the other side of the camera helping out with the equipment, so most of the shots we took were of Marcus. Thanks for being such a ham :)

After the sun went down at the park it got absolutely freezing cold, so we decided to move to a new location. We found some abandoned railroad tracks and old buildings… perfect for trying out complete blackness off-camera lighting. (which I must admit is trickier since you have no ambient fill light)

This is one of my favorites!

As we were walking back to the car we noticed a couple of “found light” opportunities, which is what the next two shots are. No flash/strobes here… just a tripod and whatever light was around.

Thanks Marcus & Ben for being such great sports… and Crissy… we MUST do this again soon!
